Northern Kentucky University College of Informatics

Northern Kentucky University's College of Informatics (http://informatics.nku.edu) is dedicated to preparing a future workforce educated not only in theory, but also with a deep understanding of the technological tools used in the real-world applications of their fields. Informatics is the application of theories and technologies of information to other fields and areas of concentration:

• Include communication and media, computer science and information technology, management information systems, biology (bioinformatics and neuroinformatics), health care informatics, and legal informatics, to name a few;
• Internships and cooperatives provide real-world experience to students through the Infrastructure Management Institute (IMI);
• Other partners include Metropolitan Education and Training Services (METS) Center, Northern Kentucky ezone, and Northern Kentucky Emerging Technology Commercialization Triangle (NKETCT), and
• The College of Informatics currently has 1,500 students, will have 3,000 in 5 years and 4,400 by 2020. The new structure to house the College of Informatics promises to be a signature structure on campus and will include a "Digitorium," which is part digital opera house, part theater, and part auditorium that will feature a 3-D projection system, and a virtual reality training environment. The facility will allow professors to create 3-D virtual blueprints.

Organizing fields of study at a university around Informatics is a new idea, cutting diagonally across traditional fields of business, engineering, arts, humanities and science. NKU is on the leading edge of this development.
