Colleges and Universities
More than 49 Universities, Colleges, and Technical Schools are located within less than a sixty minute drive from any location in the Greater Cincinnati metro area. The total enrollment for these institutions of higher learning is nearly 300,000 students and more than 51,000 graduates seeking advanced degrees.
Technical and Vocational
Northern Kentucky's technical and vocational schools prepare youth and adults for the workforce by building their academic and technical skills. The programs of study are rigorous and challenging, providing a sequence of courses which can lead to credentials and degrees accepted by colleges and universities for additional opportunities for the participants.
Primary and Secondary
Northern Kentucky schools and programs serve all residents as well as the gifted and those with special needs. Our public school systems are enhanced by a variety of private and parochial schools throughout the region. Details are herewith provided.
U.S.News & World Report, one of the nation’s leading sources of news analysis and service journalism, released its 2008 updated list of America’s Best High Schools. The methodology for Best High Schools was developed by School Evaluation Services in collaboration with Andrew Rotherham, co-founder of Education Sector and writer of Eduwonk.com.
According to the methodology, a best high school is one that succeeds at the following:
1) Attains performance levels that exceed statistical expectations given the school’s relative level of student poverty, as measured by state accountability test scores for all the school’s students in the core subjects of reading and math;
2) Achieves proficiency rates on state tests for their least advantaged student groups (e.g., black, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged students) that exceed state averages; and
3) Prepares its students for college, as measured by student participation in and performance on Advanced Placement (AP) tests, which are administered by the College Board. The Measure Up 2007 report issued by The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education indicates Kentucky scores at or above average in three of the four graded policy categories in Quality Counts.
- Kentucky is above average in standards and accountability. The state has tests aligned to state standards in the four core subjects at every grade span: elementary, middle, and high school.
- Teacher quality performance is better than average. Kentucky is one of only 15 states to require and finance mentoring for all novice teachers.
- Kentucky scores at the national average in resource equity. Kentucky has a relatively low degree of disparity in funding levels among Kentucky’s districts.
- Kentucky does not fare as well in school climate. State law does not allow charter schools.
